Wet gear can ruin an entire trip, so a rain cover is advisable. Here's a dirt-cheap Austrian take on the subject in two sizes. We finally got a small batch more, might take a long while to get more again.
It’s basically a big pouch that has an elastic cord at the mouth. You can cram it into any small space and quickly deploy it over your pack. When you pull the cord tight, the mouth will secure over your rucksack, shielding it from rain and wet ground. As an added bonus, the cover will also keep your pack nice and tidy. Pro tip: you can also use these as tire covers.
The rain cover features an elastic band with a snap-closing loop at the end for securing the cover to your rucksack even when it's removed to keep the wind from stealing your stuff.
Two sizes. The larger one is actually big and should cover rucks up to about 120 liters (7,322 cu in), and even the smaller one is nothing to sneer at, good up to 80 liters (4,882 cu in) roughly.
Made out of some mysterious Austrian synthetic fabric. Our guess is ripstop polyester. Some have a rubberized inside. No picking and choosing, you get what you get.
These usually exhibit signs of wear here and there and are priced accordingly. Some units also have markings made by Austrian soldiers. The bigger ones are in much better condition than the smaller ones.,
Please note! The level of wear in some cases is such that waterproofing will require more substantial stuff than just a spray for water repellency. If you are not up to the task, we suggest choosing a brand new rain cover, we have plenty of those to choose from. If nothing else, these can be repurposed as car tire covers in case you switch the tire type depending on the season.
