Product description

Original Austro-Hungarian M17 steel helmets, the classic coal-scuttle model! These were sold to Finland after the First World War and used around these parts for many decades, well past the Second. A very iconic piece of Finnish military history, or military history in general.

While the shells are original WW1 manufacture, these have since been refitted with new suspension and chin straps in Finnish service They have also been repainted with gray or greenish-gray, sometimes in multiple layers so the original stamps are hidden under.

In modern times these were bought from the Finnish army, then shipped to the USA, then shipped back to Finland. We got some amounts of these, and they're sold off in small lots while we dig through them. Once the whole bunch is gone, that's it.

Condition

Used, but mostly intact. As said, the liner has been replaced by the Finnish army at some point. Its condition varies, along with the chin strap, but it's always quite intact. Additionally, having had a looong service life, the shell might have small dents and scratches or rust stains. Overall these are pretty nice.

Not sold for any actual protective purposes, only as a collectible.

I’ve bought like 6 of these and I’ve received German and Austrian helmets. They were too beat up and they are super interesting. A lot of history there. Always really quick shipping and great customer service.

Purchased this helmet expecting an Austro-Hungarian M17 and recieved the arguably rarer German M18 transitional helmet. Well worth the money! The shell itself has many layers of paint and dings indicative of its long service life, the origional green peeking through many hues of grey and green-gray. The chin strap is well worn but still able to serve it's purpose and the white leather liner in great supple condition. Under the mant layers of paint a faint "64" shell size is barely peeking through - alass, too small for my monster size melon. The factory mark is evident but far to covered in paint to be definitive of and I would rather leave it unadulterated, a testimate to its long life. If money was no object I would definitely buy another! Definitely holds its value as a collectors item, conversation piece or gift for the young future historian in your life.

Over all a fantastic helmet! I actually ended up receiving an M1918 helmet with the Finnish paint and hardware and I’m very happy with it, it’s in great condition with a lot of history. I also put in a special request for a good condition liner and I’m glad to say that I received that request with my order, thank you Varusteleka!
