Product description

Here's a pair of vintage army mittens from the 1980s in very good condition! The specialty of these mittens is that they allow you to pull a trigger or use the brakes and shifters of a bike while providing the warmth you don't get with separated fingers.

Combining a windproof and water-resistant shell with a synthetic thermal liner, these mittens are really a safe space for your hands in adverse and freezing weather. We can't tell if the seams are taped so submersing your hands in a puddle will probably let water seep in thru the seams. The palm is leather for a good grip, breathability, and wear resistance.

The construction of the trigger finger is rather clever; you can pull out your index finger and group it with the rest of your fingers in case it gets cold. Along with your index finger, you can pull out the finger lining and leave just the thin shell fabric hanging out of the palm. Even the finger shell can be tucked into the mitten if you really want it out of the way.

Size info

We were able to separate three sizes. While the width is generous enough for the indicated size, the finger length is on the short side. Great for woodworkers who weren't careful with the planer!

Materials and care

The palm side is black leather, and the shell fabric seems like silnylon. Whatever it is, it repels water (and red wine) rather effectively. The fuzzy liner is "chlorofibre," basically a form of vinyl. Machine wash cold, hang to dry. We suggest fingers up to allow moisture to sink out.

French Army Surplus

These are 30–40 years old but it doesn't show. The wonders of synthetic materials, see. Expect slight color variation from pair to pair, that's all.

These are fantastic. Luxurious, goofy-chic, and practical. The fluffy lining on the inside feels like a warm cuddle from a baby lamb. The trigger finger part isn’t insulated but it’s easy to get your finger back into the main part, in case it gets lonely. The mitten is also not too bulky so that you can still maintain good dexterity for other things, like writing with a pen, when you have your index finger in the trigger finger part. I seriously can’t wait for it to get cold here to wear them. I think I might sew some kind of loop on each mitten, so I can keep them together because they don’t have a pairing attachment of any kind.

I bought these for use during a winter warfare exercise to see how they perform. Overall very good, I'm a big fan of the trigger finger outlet and works well with the C7/AR-15 platform even when not removing the trigger guard. They also insulate very well, even when wet. However, they seem to get wet very easily and yet are also not very breathable. I used these in conditions varying from -27 to -5 celsius. As well, the material construction of the gloves seems to be breaing down. The rubber on the inside of the mitts gave away quite quickly when setting up arctic tents. The fleece synthetic liner on the inside also came away in clumps. However, for a $13 CAD pair of gloves, they're pretty sweet.

Mine came entirely unissued, still sewn together, and the Medium size works perfectly well. It works, but I still need an additional fleece liner glove to use these in winter (-30/-20c). The finger thingy is unlined, but it's not too bad. The issue, aside from the lack of pairing attachment, is that it is quite tricky to slip your index finger into the trigger finger part. Once it's there it's snug and easy to operate the controls, but getting it in and out can be a bit tricky if you are, say, holding on to handlebars. But, you know, for the price it's excellent.
