Product description

You can count on the Italians to design uniforms that look fabulous and are unlikely to ever go out of style. This '70s green army jacket is an archetypal example of its kind that has often been copied when designers want to play with militant vibes.

The Esercito Italiano Mod. 75 uniform is also known as the "Roma 75" and entered service early in the 1970s. It replaced the aging Mod. 1955 uniform but maintained a fashionable green color instead of going for a camouflage pattern. A widespread thought around Europe at the time was that camouflage patterns were a "too soon" thing after WWII.

It's a lightweight jacket but does have a liner fabric in the back and most of the front - the sides and sleeves are single-ply with grommets in the armpits for breathability and heat management. The front closure features hidden buttons to prevent snagging.

The collar can be popped up and the underside has three buttons for a removable/folding tab to secure the front. The cuffs have two buttons for adjustment and allow rolling up the sleeves. The elbow reinforcement is just a second layer of the shell fabric and doesn't interfere with this.

The sides have non-adjustable elastic bands that really hug the waist and the back is pleated in the bottom to give room for the hips.

Four pockets

In case you lost your load-bearing gear, the jacket has some rather usefully thought-out pockets. The snap-fasteners are textured and have a rather solid feel to them.

The chest pockets are fairly narrow and tall (10 x 18 x 2.5 cm or 4" x 7" x 1") with a single snap-fastener and flap. The size is convenient for a 5.56 30-round magazine and this is unlikely a coincidence.

The lower front pockets are 19 x 20 x 2.5 cm or 7.5" x 8" x 1" with a bottomless divider in each. The divider holds two 30-round magazines or a pint-sized bottle upright.

Italian army surplus

These are from the 70s and 80s, worn by sweaty Italian men and taken care of in a relaxed Mediterranean fashion. The details and fabric are mostly in a good condition but expect warehouse smell and prepare to wash and air the jacket before use.

The collar tab and stars are usually there but either or both may be missing. The elastics are mostly still functional, which is a little surprising.

I have a 37" or 94 cm. chest and went for the EU 50 to have a bit more give than the EU 48. The jacket fit great and still has a flattering fit in my opinion. I also got lucky in having both Italian star patches in mint condition along with a name patch identifying the previous user. This fella Mariani not only took very good care of this jacket as evidenced by the lack of any real damage to it and the lack of any sort of stench, but he also had mighty good handwriting. Seriously, it almost looks exactly like one of those font options that can be chosen when typing up an essay which coincidently is something I have to do for one of my courses right now. The shoulder region was a bit stiff, but it will not take too long to loosen up. Another thing, as this jacket is just olive green it is not as loud as other surplus gear it can easily match up with most articles of clothing without catching any unwanted attention. I plan on doing Mariani proud and will make sure to continue to care for this jacket and wear it with pride for as long as I live. Arrivederci!

True-to-size for me, and an interesting cut. Be prepared to launder and air for a good while – this had the strongest and most offensive reek of all the demobilised gear I've had. My piece has all the hardware and the elastic in good condition, a few minor tears in hard-to-see places that were nicely patched by previous owners, and a faint blood-coloured stain on the left shoulder. Maybe it's just me, but the elbow pads are much thicker and more prominent than the photos'd suggest – they were a little stiff at first but broke in after laundering and wearing for a bit. Feels heavy in the hand but quite light to wear overall; very happy with it and I'm pretty sure it'll last me much longer than my last jacket in normal use.
