Finnish supercomposite!
When you handle the spork, it kinda feels like good old bakelite:
Our very own Kareline® natural fibre composite: Eco-friendly cellulose fibres from certified Finnish forests reinforce the material with FDA approved polypropylene used as an adhesive. (Ratio: 50% wood-based cellulose fibres + 50% thermoplastic). Products from this material age beautifully yet keeping their qualities. The development of Kareline® natural fibre composite material was initiated by Puugia, the Centre for Wood Technology in Joensuu, Finland.
The products can be recycled, incinerated for heat energy or returned to us for re-use. Kupilka® fulfils the requirements of EU No 10/2011 and 1935/2004/EC §3.
You can even send the product back to Kupilka for reuse. Essentially this only happens when you get bored with it, as the service life is virtually indefinite.
The material has a nice amount of good features:
- Can take both boiling water (+100°C / 212°F) as well as -30°C / -22°F temperatures.
- Can be hand or machine washed.
- Does not absorb smells or tastes: you can eat spicy foods or stir your tea, coffee, water, and booze with it!
- Dyed with colors that are approved for food contact. There is no coating that would wear off during use.
Kupilka complies with the requirements of the EU Plastic regulation. It is thus approved to be used for food/drinks and doesn’t contain any bamboo or other plant-based fibers that aren’t approved by the regulation.
