Product description

Small, lightweight, and warm US rain poncho liner a.k.a. Woobie. Together with the rain poncho, it also turns into a summer sleeping bag. If you don’t own one of those, you can also use this as a lightweight spare blanket at home or your cottage. Or keep it in your car for those emergencies. Avoid cheap knock-offs, these are new and made in the USA!

History

Originally used in the Vietnam War, this lightweight poncho liner was meant as a replacement for the wool blanket. Compared to the blanket, it is a lot lighter, a bit warmer, dries faster, and can be packed into a very small space .It is also known as a Woobie, because: "Without one, you woobie cold!". After being introduced, the rain poncho & liner combo soon became the standard-issue sleeping gear for hot climates or general summer use.

Features

Made from lightweight, durable, and dirt-repelling 100% Ripstop Nylon with 100% Polyester inner insulation for lightweight warmth. The materials and overall quality are excellent. Several color options, and the measurements and weight differ a little bit from color to color. Made in the USA according to strict government specifications.

These don't include a carry bag. If you want one, for example, the 5 L Särmä TST Dry Bag or any similarly sized compression bag works very well.

The product is great, the woobie also has some history in it. I especially like the low weight. It folds perfectly in the 5 L Savotta mesh stuff sack. Many colour options available. I usually take it with me when hiking or climbing, but it also proofed useful for relaxing in the garden.

You can't go wrong with the woobie. It's the first item I grab (second is a book) when "someone" sends me to sleep in the "barn" (downstairs sofa). It is also the core of my outdoor "intermediate" sleeping system: the woobie tied inside a British army pattern 58 rain poncho, both within a buttoned-up NVA shelter half, everything neatly rolled up and carried in a Falklands-era NOS poncho roll. These woobies here are a tad on the pricey side, but, hey, they're brand new, and they'll sure last longer than me and, maybe, you.

Like the US camp bed, these poncho liners are a firm favourite with us Brits, too. I bought mine in woodland camo from a US Army kit shop on a base in West Germany in 1987 during the First Cold War, and it has been part of my field kit ever since. Once again, the Brits were first in the field, or rather Far Eastern rain forest, with this concept: I also own three green lightweight blankets made of Aussie wool that Commonwealth forces used as part of the tropical sleeping system,. These are dated 1965 and have snap-fastening tabs for a poncho around the edges. But then our armed forces, particularly the ANZACs and Gurkhas, had lots of jungle warfare experience during and after WWII: Malaya and Borneo were two long-running campaigns which the good guys won in the end. In the latter conflict (1962-66), Commonwealth forces were also the first to use the AR15 rifle, and in 1965 an RAF Regiment liaison officer in Vietnam recommended it to the USAF Security Police to use for airfield defence there. The US Army subsequently adopted it for their operations up-country, and the rest is military firearms history.... Anyway, we called them 'American poncho liners' where I come from - 'Woobie' is a bit millennial snowflake Linus comfort blanket sounding for me.
